For years I’ve greatly admired a specific photographer from Utah. I’d followed her work since 2012. The way she captured moments and people with such beautiful creativeness and artistry truly left an impact on me as a fellow photographer.
In 2020 I sent her an enquiry to shoot our wedding — and when her price guide landed in my inbox, I definitely died a little inside.
$15,000 USD to have her there on the day (before flights & before accommodation). Even without adding travel, that was a radical amount of money for us at the time.
Like most couples planning their wedding, we made the “practical” choice. We hired someone within budget, told ourselves it would be fine and kept moving along the never ending list of “wedding planning things to do.”
But here’s the reality four years later.. since 2021, I’ve looked at our wedding photos maybe five times.
Not because I don’t love my wife or our special day or anything like that, but because I knew the style of storytelling I really wanted — the type of photos I’d fell in love with time and time again, and every time I saw this style on Instagram or Pinterest I’d always think “THAT’S how I picture my wedding day being captured!”
We let the ‘budget’ we had at that time in our lives decide the photos we’ll have with for the rest of our lives.
And we’ll never get that chance back.
