WHAT PART OF THE EAST COAST ARE YOU BASED?
I’m based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. I’ve lived here on and off for almost a decade, it’s a friggen’ awesome place. If you’re a surfer you’ll probably see me out at Noosa one of these days (look for a red fish board!).
PAINT US A PICTURE OF THE BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE MAN BEHIND: WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN, HOBBIES, ETC.?
Heck yeah! My days are usually spent checking the surf cams and watering my plants. I’ve recently installed a vertical herb garden in the backyard which has been providing the delicious goods. I’m a follower of Christ, I froth the outdoors and have nearly died on numerous occasions in multiple countries doing stupid hikes without proper preparation (that’s me, lol).
In my downtime I enjoy fixing and repairing and restoring old film cameras which pairs well with my love for antiquity and photography.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF TO WORK WITH?
A flippin bucket load of over the top froth and stoke! I always come prepared with specific shots and images that I know I want to get throughout a wedding day to cover all bases and make sure the final gallery is exceptionally juicy with story filled and creative candid photos. The process of capturing and documenting with me behind the camera is a very professional, relaxed and best friend kind of approach.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?
I’ve been shooting weddings for over four years and have been behind the camera for nearly ten.
HOW MANY WEDDINGS DO YOU SHOOT A YEAR?
I only shoot 30 weddings / elopements a year.
HOW WOULD YOU EXPLAIN YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE IN DETAIL?
Golden warm memories of incredibly momentous moments. I love the nostalgia of film from the 70s and the warmth that came with images 50 years ago, my current style is heavily inspired by colours and tonality from when your parents were discovering photography. Depending on the part of the day things look a little bit different regarding my style, for example in the morning and during the ceremony I’m usually shooting with a pair of Sony A7’s and firing off plenty of images to make sure every moment is captured.
The first half of the day is usually focused on the candid and unposed and natural moments that are happening in real time. Moving into the bridal party and couple portraits is where I usually bring out my medium format film cameras and I’m a lot more intentional and purposeful with the images and moments that I like to curate and create between a group of people and a couple.
WHY DO YOU LOVE SHOOTING WEDDINGS SO MUCH?
I just love being a part of the fun! You get to witness the best day in a couples journey together, multiple times a year, year after year – it’s flipping awesome! Not many other careers allow you to play such a massive part in other people‘s lives as they move forward in their story to becoming a unique family.
I’M CURIOUS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE WEDDING PHOTOS CAN DRAG ON A LITTLE AND SOME PEOPLE DREAD THEM.. HOW DO YOU MAKE IT FUN?
It’s a lot easier to have fun with someone you comfortable around who is your friend then it is someone you’ve never really met before, before the wedding I put a lot of effort into creating a relationship with you guys that supersedes the idea of me just being a vendor. I’m your best friend! It’s super easy to have fun with your best friend-we’re gonna be joking around having a laugh, running around being silly, just being a bunch of goofs creating epic art together. I’m super down to make things work within your preferred timelines when it comes to photos to! If you guys only want 30 minutes for photos then that’s totally fine, if you want three hours for photos then let’s Flippen do this! My point is I can work within your schedule and if you are more comfortable with getting them done sooner than later or would prefer a little bit more time for creative freedom and photo taking, you’re guaranteed a good time.
WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE PART OF DOCUMENTING A WEDDING?
I have a lot of fun during the couple portraits after the ceremony, one of my favourite parts of the day to shoot however is the reception. By that point everyone’s had a few beers and is feeling a little bit looser and is ready to party. I will usually have a beer with everyone else and jump on the dancefloor
WHAT’S YOUR GOLDEN ADVICE FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF OUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY?
Communication with your photographer is like handing them the keys to a new car, it makes things go a lot further than without. What’s your wedding theme / style inspiration? What time are you planning your ceremony? Communication is key!
WHAT WILL BE YOUR FAVOURITE FIVE MEMORIES TO CAPTURE AT OUR WEDDING?
Haha I have a few of these! Let’s raffle them off in no particular order:
- The moment your dad sees you in the dress for the first time is pretty special and usually accompanied by a tsunami of tears and joy
- The moment your soon to be husband finally sees you walking down the aisle towards him looking the best you’ve ever looked – now THAT’S a ripper shot!
- Finding a rustic corner or beautiful forest backdrop to be silly share some laughs with you and your bride tribe, popping the shamps’ and acting a muck. These moments are everything and are definitely some of my favourite memories to capture.
- Running around a field or paddock with you guys at golden hour, capturing your dress flowing in the wind and the creamy AF light catching your face as you guys slow dance in the breeze. WHOA.
- Your grandparents getting rowdy at the reception! Yo! Some old cats can really boogie, holy moly.
WHY DO YOU THINK YOUR WORK IS DIFFERENT FROM EVERY OTHER COOKIE CUTTING WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
Everyone’s a photographer now days, but being an entertaining addition to you and your people, now that’s a harder find. The technical aspect to capturing moments with the right camera settings and good light is like learning to walk, every photographer knows that stuff.
I enjoy unleashing the inner Aussie bloke persona and dancing around like we’re at bush-doofing under a full moon. A lot of my couples call me the Honey Badger’s cousin.
WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR COUPLES WHO ARE A LITTLE BIT NERVOUS ABOUT GETTING THE PHOTOS? HOW DO YOU GET THEM TO RELAX AROUND YOU?
Because it’s going to be fun! Like soooo so much fun! I know the idea of getting a photo taken might sound like a slap to the face and for many people it is very nerve wracking. I focus almost entirely on creating candid and natural moments between you guys that produce authentic and raw images.
For example one of my favourite directions to give a couple is to get the bride and groom in an intimate position and then tell the groom to whisper in the brides ear his favourite vegetable and how he cooks it and eats it, BUT IN A REALLY OLD DUDES SEDUCTIVE VOICE. Now if you can stop and imagine your soulmate whispering ‘beans and corn’ into your ear like he’s Hugh Hefner, 10/10 times both the bride and groom crack into tears at how silly that sounds! And the beautiful thing about freezing moments in time is when you look at the photo, you can’t have any idea what was said or done in the moment apart from the visual vibes you see in the photo.
DO YOU TRAVEL?
Absolutely. Weddings and shoots outside the Sunshine Coast area will incur a travel of $25/hour travel fee, there and back. This amount is calculated prior to the shoot and will be included on the invoice.
HOW FAR ARE YOU WILLING TO TRAVEL?
As far as the sun sets.
WHAT’S THE GO IF THE GOD OF THUNDER DECIDES TO RAIN ON OUR PARADE COME THE WEDDING DAY?
Depending on how adventurous you guys are, there’s a couple options. First, let’s get wet and create some magic in the rain!! I’ll bring some umbrella’s, heck I’ll even organise a slip’n’slide, I’m SO down to create art with you guys in any weather. I’ll always try and scout a few backup locations that cater for ‘wet weather’, if you’re weddings in the middle of a paddock this might be a tad harder.
If the weather is so atrocious and unforgiving, I’ll happily organise an post-wedding bridal shoot with you both in nicer weather perhaps when you’re back from your honeymoon at no charge.
WHAT ASPECTS AND SCENARIOS MAKE A WEDDING EASY OR HARD TO SHOOT?
The vulnerability a couple is willing to share with me as their photographer is a huge factor in how authentic their photos look at the end of the day. If you’re not comfortable with me by the time your wedding comes around, I’ve done you a disservice. I put A LOT of effort into formulating and epic best friendship with you both months and months and months before you stand in front of your people and share your I Do’s.
DO YOU SHOOT WITH A SECOND PHOTOGRAPHER?
Most of the time! I SO strongly encourage this so much so that I recently put it in my collections as a free add on, that’s how much I believe in the value from a second shooter on the day.
CAN WE CREATE A CUSTOMISED PACKAGE?
Absolutely! Depending on what your needs are we can mix and match things around to make sure you’re getting exactly what’s perfect for you and your day.
HOW DO WE BOOK YOU?
After you get in touch, and I’m available on your date, I’ll send through my very detailed and laid out Pricing Guide PDF and you’ll be given directions on how to schedule in a one-on-one zoom call with me. After a call together and we’re both certain we’re the right fit for each other, I’ll send through your personal quote which you will need to accept – once accepted this turns into your contract and invoice which gets automatically updated every time you make a payment. You’ll also be sent your first questionnaire as soon as your deposit is paid.
HOW MUCH IS YOUR NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT / BOOKING FEE?
I require a 25% non-refundable deposit to lock your date into my calendar.
IF WE NEED TO POSTPONE, WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR DEPOSIT / BOOKING FEE?
The booking fee is non-refundable. However, I completely understand this is a very trying time and I’ve put things in place that will attempt to accomodate the situation if you require to re-schedule. Please keep in mind; re-scheduling and cancelling your wedding OR my services are two very different things.
Here’s my process as it currently stands:
1) If you re-schedule to a date that is currently available in my calendar, I will transfer your current booking fee over to your new date at no cost. You don’t lose any money in this instance.
2) If you re-schedule to a date that is currently booked in my calendar, you will ONLY receive your deposit back IF I’m able to re-book your original date with another couple. If I’m unable to book your original date with another couple you forfeit your booking fee.
3) If you decide to cancel your wedding due to Covid restrictions (whatever they may be in your case; family can’t make it / not allowed the original amount / there’s a worldwide shortage of beer), you forfeit your booking fee.
WHAT IF YOU’RE UNABLE TO MAKE OUR WEDDING DUE TO CROSS BORDER / COUNTRY TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS, OR YOU RANDOMLY DIE OR SOMETHING?
If your wedding still goes ahead and the only reason I’m unable to make your wedding is because of Covid-19 related impositions, you will be entitled to a full refund of the amount spent thus far, including the booking fee. This is ONLY valid in the event that your wedding still moves forward on your original date. If you decide to post-pone or cancel due to Covid-19 impositions, then the previous answer is in effect.
WE’RE KEEN ON AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT / COUPLE SESSION, HOW DO WE BOOK THIS?
My main two wedding collections include an engagement shoot for free as part of the collection! If you’re eloping and want an engagement shoot, it’s an extra $500.
HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU RECOMMEND WE ALLOW FOR PHOTOS WITH OUR BRIDAL PARTY?
Click here to view my Ultimate Timeline Bride Guide.
DO WE HAVE TO FEED YOU AT THE RECEPTION?
If I’m there for more than five hours, yes! There’s a line in the contract that runs over this one.
CAN OUR AWESOME FRIENDS & FAMILY TAKE PICTURES TOO?
Of course! Everyone is super welcome to pick up the phone and take some photos if you’re happy to allow it with the caveat that I would strongly discourage photo taking during the ceremony, ESPECIALLY uncle Bob with his DSLR under the impression he’s helping out by ‘capturing the moments I’m not’. You hire a professional for a reason, don’t be afraid to tell your guests that your ceremony is unplugged but they’re welcome to take photos the rest of the day.
ARE WE ALLOWED TO PROVIDE YOU WITH A SHOT LIST OF ANY KIND?
Absolutely! If you have any inspiration for how you’d like your couple portraits to look, maybe you have a specific idea in mind for you and your bridal party to pose in a certain way – that’s totally cool! I’m so down to create with you guys. I have a shot list that I go through like canon fire during the family photos.
WE’RE KEEN ON AN UNUSUAL LOCATION FOR SOME OR OUR PORTRAITS, DO YOU ARRANGE THE APPROPRIATE PERMISSIONS?
I’ll always research locations for shoots and if (where applicable) a permit or permission is needed, I’ll make sure to have that covered well before the day.
DO YOU DRINK ALCOHOL WHEN YOU’RE WORKING?
I’m not shy to a casual bevy with the boys during the day, for sure. I would never excessively pump down the beers obviously but I definitely enjoy the odd one here and there. You hire me as your best friend (one of the boys!), I just happen to have a camera.
HOW (TAYLOR) SWIFT ARE YOU WITH IMAGE TURNAROUND TIME?
Generally I have the entire gallery culled, edited, uploaded and sent off to you at the six week mark from your wedding day. You’ll receive a whopper load of email updates in regards to the current whereabouts of your beautiful set of goodies (images) post wedding.
DO WE GET ANY SNEAK PEAKS AFTER OUR WEDDING?
HEEECK YES! The day after your wedding I send through 10 to 20 images for you to shower the gram with. Let’s share the good news!
HOW DO WE GET OUR GALLERY OF IMAGES?
After the wedding I’ll send you a link to your own personal online gallery hosted with Pic-Time. You’ll be able to download high res / low res versions of your photos, order prints and even design your own album within your gallery.
WHAT’S YOUR IMAGE BACKUP PROCESS? HOW DO YOU KEEP OUR WEDDING PHOTOS SAFE?
I backup all the RAW files onto three seperate hard drives + an online backup. Your gallery also acts as another backup, as well as any backups you yourself might make. That makes over five backups of your images between the both of us! I never delete any RAW’s from any wedding I’ve ever shot, you best believe when I’m fifty I’ll have a section of the garage locked off for archived hard drive space, haha.
ARE ALL OUR PHOTOGRAPHS EDITED?
Yes! I never send anything that hasn’t been touched up in some degree.
ARE ALL OF OUR PHOTOGRAPHS IN COLOUR OR DO YOU DO ANY BLACK AND WHITE?
I usually deliver about 80/20 colour to black and white. Which photos are delivered in black and white has to do with the feel of the moment – it’s a weird idea but some photos were made to be in black and white and others not.
HOW MANY PICTURES DO WE GET?
Depending on the collection you go with, you’ll get a minimum of 600 high res professionally edited, creamy AF photos from a full wedding day.
DO WE GET TO KEEP THE NEGATIVES/ORIGINAL IMAGES E.G. RAW?
As a rule of thumb I don’t generally hand out RAW’s and the negatives from weddings – these remain in safe keeping with me.
WE WOULD LITERALLY DIE TO HAVE OUR WEDDING PHOTOS / STORY FEATURED ON A WEDDING BLOG OR PUBLISHED IN A WEDDING MAGAZINE, CAN YOU HELP US WITH THAT?
HEEECCCKCKKKK YESS!! I always submit EVERY wedding I shoot to blogs and magazines. After the wedding I’ll send through a personal questionnaire so I can submit your story and get you guys PUBLISHED!
